3 Tips For Attending An Indian Wedding

Fashion blogger Shloka Narang of The Silk Sneaker shares her three tips for attending an Indian wedding

Indian Weddings Are Magical…

Having been born and brought up in India, I’ve attended my fair share of Indian weddings. In fact, just last week I attended another one! Indian weddings are nothing short of special; the colours, the dancing, the celebrations and of course the gorgeous outfits. With so many different rituals and events, they usually last a couple of days, but trust me, they are so much fun! A lot of you have been asking me what it’s like to go to an Indian wedding and although I covered some of it in my post yesterday, I have three tips that will ensure you are super prepared for when you attend an Indian wedding!

Fashion blogger Shloka Narang of The Silk Sneaker shares her three tips for attending an Indian wedding

There was about a half an hour wait in 40 degree heat for my outfit to be steamed and my make up still remained in place thanks to my essentials!

1. Prepare Your Makeup For The Heat

If you’re attending an Indian wedding in India, prepare yourself for some heat! I always find that even if the event is taking place indoors, there is so much dancing and celebration, that you land up sweating anyways! Especially because Indian traditional outfits are quite heavy. There are a few makeup products that are perfect for long wear and for making your makeup last longer! These are the ones I swear by:

Dior Star Foundation: Lasts all night long, and probably the next morning too! The coverage is fabulous and I never leave for a trip without it!

YSL Mascara: The YSL mascara is waterproof and in my opinion sweat proof too! It lasts for ages and doesn’t drip at all. The perfect way to get those glam long lashes too without having to opt for fake ones!

Clarins Fix Make-Up Spray: I can’t stress the importance of this one enough. It’s the final step in my routine and I spray it on right before I walk out the door. It keeps my make up in place for hours and makes sure that everything looks as perfect as the moment I put it on! Plus, it gives your face this beautiful glow and doesn’t let your make up look powdery!

2. Bring Flats

I always start the night in heels but with all the dancing and running around, I always end the night in flats! So come prepared with a pair of comfortable flats to keep you going all night long!

Ive linked to some super stylish flats that are equally comfortable as they are glam below:

My outfit was actually ivory and pastel pink. The pops of pink added the colour it needed!

3. Avoid Wearing White

It’s rare that we wear white to weddings. Usually, Indian weddings are a celebration of many colours, so opt for bright or pastel shades rather than white’s or black! One of my outfits has an ivory bottom, but a pink top, so I always have a splash of colour somehow!

Here are some perfect accessories for that splash of colour:

My India Travel Diary: New Delhi & Jodhpur

Surprise! I was in India for most of last week, attending a very special wedding! We were attending from the bride’s side, who was marrying into one of the royal families of Jodhpur so this was nothing short of special! Although I didn’t post about it on Instagram while I was there (see my stories, or this post for why!) I still documented my entire trip, including everything I wore to this Indian wedding, to share with you guys here! In my travel diary, I’m sharing with you what to wear in India, what to see if you’re ever in Jodhpur, and just the highlights and special moments from my trip! Although I’m totally shattered after this super short trip back, I’m already excited for my next adventure (hint hint, it’s my birthday on Saturday!) but, one thing at a time right? So here’s all the amazing moments from my India travel diary!

Fashion and Travel blogger Shloka Narang shares her India Travel Diary including her tips for New Delhi and Jodhpur and what to wear in India

Our first two nights were celebrated in New Delhi. Although I was battling jet lag, the two events were both so magical and so much fun that I had the best time! On the first evening I wore one of my favourite outfits from Monisha Jaising. If you’ve followed my blog for a while you’ll see that I’ve worn this outfit to almost every wedding I’ve attended for at least one of the events!

On the second day, I opted for an outfit that is not as traditional but is equally beautiful! The style I’m wearing in both images is called a lehnga; a crop top and long skirt. Usually, with lots of embroidery on it! I opted for a heavily embroidered top with a totally plain bottom. I loved the effect of the contrast! I wore this to the actual wedding ceremony!

If you watch my highlights on my stories, you’ll know that A. I love to cook and B. I love to eat! One of the things I miss the most about India is the amazing food, so I was so excited to eat all my favourites! If you’re ever in India, there are a few things you just have to try, my favourites include Idli (what I was eating in my stories, with a face of pure joy), dosa, appam, butter chicken & chaat. This is just the start of my list hah!

Outfit: Monisha Jaising

Bag: The Line A.K

A day later, we were off to Jodhpur! Although I lived in India for 18 years, I never visited Jodhpur so i was incredibly excited. We were invited to stay in one of the palaces, that has now been converted into a hotel; Ajit Bhavan. It was breath taking and if you’re visiting, I would highly recommend it! Just look at the view from my room!

For this evening event, we visited another neighbouring royal location which had the most fabulous collection of vintage cars! The bride herself drove in in one from the 1940’s! (How amazing is that??). It was nothing short of magical!

For this event, I wore an outfit from Indian designer Manish Mahlotra. It’s a jumpsuit on the inside with the most stunning kimono style jacket over. It has a belt that goes over it as well. For the after party, I just took this off and partied in my jumpsuit! The perfect outfit for any Indian wedding!

Stay tuned, there will be many more photos going up on my Instagram this week!

On our final day in Jodhpur, we woke up a little earlier to go see one of the most famous forts. The property is still being restored however each room was more breath taking than the next. We saw a room made completely of mirrors, one made with gold ceilings. We saw the most fabulous jewels, antique pieces, and so much more, each with a new story to tell!

Plus, the view from the very top of the fort of all the blue houses of Jodhpur was stunning. Jodhpur is known as the blue city as most of the roofs are blue! It really is worth visiting if you are in India!

I was wearing a blouse from Ba&sh along with a Maje skirt. Although both these pieces are old, I’ve linked to similar ones here:

Skirt

I was also wearing these shoes from Malone Soulier! Super comfortable for everything!

The Prettiest Cafes in London

Fashion blogger Shloka Narang of The Silk Sneaker showcases some of the most Instagrammable cafes in London

They Look As Good As They Taste…

In an age of Instagram, what it looks like is as important as what it tastes like! As much as I love my food, I am guilty of secretly loving a place for looking beautiful as well and I know I’m not the only one. Today I wanted to share with you some of Londons most  “instagrammable” cafes. If Instagram isn’t your game though, this list is just five of the prettiest cafes in London that are just worth a visit! Whether it’s for the gram, a day out, a dose of inspiration or just a damn good cup of coffee, these five places will not fail you!

Peggy Porschen

The lines are long and the place is small but Peggy Porschen is worth the wait. Not only is the entrance to this little cafe famous (you would have to be living under a rock to not have seen this on your feed at some point) but the cupcakes are so incredibly yummy! My favourite is the strawberries and champagne cupcake. If I were to ever break my sugar rule, this would be one of the things I would do it for! Plus I love when something tastes as good as it grams!

Elan Cafe Knightsbridge

The latest spot to hit London is Elan cafe Knightsbridge. Although Elan has it’s original branch in Mayfair, it’s latest Knightsbridge opening is one of the prettiest places I’ve ever been. If you’re wondering where the famous cafe with the flower wall is, you’ve just found it. Complete with pink croissants, blue latte’s and overall, just some yummy food, Elan is another gorgeous spot that makes it feel like it’s springtime in London all year round. Plus, anywhere with fun neon signs is great in my book!

The Ivy Chelsea Garden

The Ivy is always a must visit, whether you go to their Tower Bridge restaurant, the Marylebone cafe, or the original in Chelsea. Regardless of whether they have their famous flower door on display or not, it’s a gorgeous spot to sit and enjoy your coffee or a glass of wine. I would highly recommend visiting when the weather is warmer! That’s when it really shines!

Dalloway Terrace

What I love about Dalloway terrace is that it changes with the seasons. During the winter it’s a glorious winter wonderland, in the spring, it’s a stunning garden. Regardless of when you go you can’t resist the gorgeous striped cups and the warm interiors. It makes you want to sit there all day long! Plus, the food is super yummy! Although I’m not an avocado on toast kind of girl (shock and horror, I don’t like avocado), I hear it’s pretty good!

Sketch

Sketch is an incredibly famous London spot for tea, drinks, dinner and everything else. Each room has something new to offer, even the bathrooms. If you can manage a tea here, it’s well worth it, but otherwise I suggest just dropping in for a drink! Be sure to take a round of their famous pink tea room and stop by the futuristic bathroom! You won’t be sorry!

Of course, there are so many more gorgeous spots in London. Two that I would also highly recommend would be NAC (stands for North Audley Canteen) for their amazing food and adorable interiors, and Aubaine Selfridges because it’s just stunning with the hanging lavender and lilac vibes.

What are your favourite London cafes?

The 4 Cutest Places To Shop In Amsterdam

It’s Shopping Time!

I love to travel, and I love to shop so combine the two and I can be pretty unstoppable! One of my favourite things about visiting new places is discovering new brands and those hidden gems that each city has to offer. Amsterdam is no different and on my recent trips to this amazing city, I discovered some super cute places to shop in Amsterdam! Each of these places has something different to offer but I’ve found some of my favourite pieces ever at each of them! So, if you’re a local or you’re planning on visiting, be sure to stop at each of these four stores!

Fashion and travel blogger Shloka Narang shares her favourite spots to shop in Amsterdam

Parisienne Amsterdam

This is a beautiful little store on the Negen Straatjes which stocks the most fabulous selection of jewellery. I always like to visit this store for its amazing collection of earrings. In fact, the tortoiseshell effect earrings that I wore in this post here, that you all went crazy for, are from this store! I highly recommend a visit, you’ll be sure to spend hours trying on all the amazing pairs! The owner of the store is also super lovely!

Pro Tip: The Negen Straatjes (nine streets) is a great area to discover super cute boutiques in Amsterdam! Really unique and stylish stores!

Catwalk Junkie

We stumbled across this adorable store while walking around. It was full of super soft jumpers, adorable accessories and very instagrammable corners. I mean can you ask for more than the triple threat? I highly recommend this for those off-duty pieces that you need for the weekends or for your travels! I guarantee you’ll find something you love or at least a super cute mirror selfie! Luckily, you can also shop them online here.

Mendo

Okay, I have an obsession with coffee table books. I want them all! So when I walked into Mendo I was ready to snuggle up with a pile of books and spend the day here! I actually saw a lot of amazing coffee table books here first, before I saw them at Selfridges or any other bookstore! If you’re a fashion and design lover like me, this is going to get your creative juices flowing for sure!

Anecdote

I am obsessed with Anecdote. They are a Dutch brand that makes the coolest hoodies that are also so comfortable! I travel in my Anecdote hoodie so often and I love the minimal cool girl style they have to offer. They have a lovely store in Amsterdam that is very much worth a visit! Check out their collection here!

The Cutest Spots For A Meal in Amsterdam

It’s no secret that Amsterdam is one of my favourite cities! I think that a lot of people sometimes have an impression that it’s all about drugs and alcohol but in fact, Amsterdam is full of beautiful art, cute shopping and amazing food! Although I am not always in the city itself, I’ve been able to try so many fun restaurants while I’ve been there that I just had to share my five favourites with you!  If you’re a newsletter subscriber you’ve already heard about some of these spots when I shared my Amsterdam travel diary with you all! I always land up visiting at least one of these restaurants while I’m there and I would highly recommend all of them to you! So, if you’ve got a trip this beautiful city coming up or just have a case of wanderlust, here are five spots worthy of your tummy and your Instagram!

Cafe George

I love this place! They also have a sister restaurant called Cafe Georgette! The menu is full of Dutch classics, seafood and fabulous desserts. I love coming here even if it’s just for a coffee! I highly recommend the tartare, the croquettes and the oysters! For dessert, go for the chocolate cake!

Mr. Porter

Nope, this isn’t the menswear e-commerce. This is the best steakhouse in the city with the most fabulous view. Everything is made in their Josper grill and it has to be one of the best meals I had on my most recent trip to this city! The view is where this gorgeous photo was taken as well! So, if you are a steak fan, you HAVE to visit this restaurant at least once!

Momo

If you love Asian food like me, then Momo is your place! Super centrally located, super food and a super atmosphere. You really can’t go wrong here! Plus it’s very cute on your next Instagram!

The Duchess

One of my favourite spots in Amsterdam, and also a part of the W Hotel, the food at The Duchess always amazes. Try the duck, which literally melts in your mouth, and for the dessert, ask for the liquid nitrogen ice cream which is made at your table! How cool is that? If that’s not worth an Instagram story, then I don’t know what is.

The Seafood Bar

Right off the main shopping street of Amsterdam, you will find this adorable cafe. As the name suggests, their speciality is all things Sea Food! It’s a beautiful spot for a break in the summer, especially if you can get a seat outside!

5 Things I Learned When I Moved to London

If you’ve been following my blog for a little while, you will know that I am originally from Mumbai, India. Before I packed my bags and moved to London 5 years ago, I was born and raised in sunny India. I lived there for 18 years. My move to London for university was the first big move I have ever experienced. Although my family and I have frequently visited London throughout my life, leaving my childhood home was an incredibly intimidating experience for me. As an only child, being close to my family was everything. Suddenly, I found myself surrounded by new people, new places, new everything, while my family was thousands of miles away. You can only imagine the fear I felt. I didn’t know what to expect and although I was terrified, my excitement for my new adventure could not be ignored. I’m sure that anyone who has moved or is thinking about moving can relate to that. The lessons I have learned since moving away have defined the woman I am today. Being a notable milestone in my life, I wanted to share the five most important things that I have learned since I moved to London

Fashion blogger Shloka Narang of The Silk Sneaker shares the 5 lessons she learned when she moved away from home to Londo

This was one of the first photos I took for my blog. I was so self conscious I couldn’t even look at the camera!

Sometimes, You Need To Be Alone

One of my biggest fears about moving away was the idea that I was going to be all alone. Having to make new friends and find my place in a new city made me feel afraid because I knew that I was going to be doing it all by myself. What I realized is that being alone and feeling alone are two very different things. Being able to be alone, and being comfortable with yourself is a skill that I learned living by myself in London. When I realized that I could actually be by myself, I developed a new sense of confidence in my abilities. I suddenly came to see how important it is to be comfortable with who you are. Although it’s incredibly scary, it is so necessary to be able to internally reflect and be happy with yourself. When I was able to be alone, but not feel alone, I knew I had reached a milestone.

There Is No Such Thing As Failure

A few years ago my father gifted me a book entitled “Think Like An Artist”.  A fascinating lesson this book taught me is that there is no such thing as failure. The concept of failure exists only within us. To fail, only means that you are trying. If you get back up and try again, you have not failed. You are just still finding your way to your goal. I have always been my harshest critic, and I have always been the quickest to see my flaws and “failures”. When I moved away I realized that I have only failed if I give up. If I keep trying, keep pushing and keep working hard, I have not failed. Don’t ever give up on your dreams. There will always be obstacles in your way, but if you just keep going, you will never fail.

This photo was taken right after I graduated a year ago. I had the highest GPA in my graduating class (4.o baby!) and I received a medal and award. It was one of my proudest moments. Read more about my graduation here.

Fashion blogger Shloka Narang of The Silk Sneaker shares the 5 lessons she learned when she moved away from home to London

This photo was taken in Cannes last year. What’s interesting is that I was actually struggling with my body image a lot at this point. That’ actually something I’ve always struggled with, but that’s a story for a different time.

Love Yourself

I have always been told that self-love is one of the most important things but it wasn’t until I moved away and had to be independent that I learned what self-love really was. When you are by yourself, with no one else there to tell you what you are doing well, It is so easy to get lost in the negatives. It’s almost easier to look in the mirror every morning and see all the things you wish you could change. What I learned was this. The only way you can give and receive love is if you love yourself first. The first person who needs to see the value and beauty in you is you. Wake up every morning and build yourself up. See the positives in yourself, whether that be physical, emotional or mental. When you love yourself, you are unstoppable.

If You Want It Go and Get It

The sense of independence that was thrust upon me when I moved to London was incredibly sudden but it also taught me that if you want something, you need to make it happen for yourself. Rather than sitting back and waiting for opportunities to come to you, you need to put yourself out there and make those circumstances happen. Only you can create the reality you want. I think I really understood this when I started my blog. The amount of love, sweat, and tears that go into creating the content I create 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, can sometimes be overwhelming, but the only way I can reach my goals and make my digital space a reality for myself and for you, is by putting myself out there. Don’t sit back and wait for life to drop something into your lap, go and put it there!

Fashion blogger Shloka Narang of The Silk Sneaker shares the 5 lessons she learned when she moved away from home to London

This was the first London Fashion Week I ever attended. I was so nervous and I look back at this outfit and I know there are things I would change. Still, I was really proud and I even got to take over the Bloglovin’ snapchat that day. All because I put myself out there.

Don’t Let Others Define You; Find Your Own Voice

Regardless of who you are and what you do, there will always be people who bring negativity to your life. There will be people who don’t like what you do, who think you don’t work hard enough or that you don’t deserve what you have. Ignore them. Don’t let other people’s words and thoughts about you, define who you are. In all the noise, find your own voice. Since I’ve started my blog, I have had my fair share of negativity. I have had my fair share of people who think that what I do is “silly” or “not real work”. Although it is so easy to get bogged down by these comments, I learned that the opinions of people who are only bringing negativity into your life, do not matter. If I know the incredible amount of hard work that I do and invest into myself and my work, then success will come. My voice will always be louder.

I don’t open up about myself and my experiences on my blog very often, but I know that we all have or will experience similar feelings of negativity and fear in our lives. I hope that my experiences and lessons can help you too.
