It’s a new season and everyone is getting ready to fill their wardrobes with the latest spring summer 2019 trends. Trust me, I love a good shopping trip as much as the next girl but over the years I’ve noticed a massive change in my shopping habits. I used to walk into Zara and walk out with countless items, some that I loved, some that I just liked and some that I would probably never wear. Fast forward to today and I find that I have finally learnt the art of being a smart shopper. As my priorities have changed, I have learnt when it’s worth putting down a little bit of extra £££ to get something that is going to last me a lifetime and that I actually like. I’ve learnt when it’s worth buying into a trend and how to shop so that I am actually excited about my wardrobe. I may not be walking out of the stores with as many pieces as I used to, but in this case, less is more, especially when every single piece you’ve bought sparks joy.
So, as you get ready to hit the stores, here are a few things to keep in mind to be a mindful shopper too…
1. KNOW WHERE TO INVEST AND WHERE NOT TO…
There are moments where I truly believe that spending more on a particular item is going to get you a piece that you’re going to love and cherish for years and years, wear on repeat and it’s going to be superb quality. Those are wise investments. At the same time, there are pieces that are just not worth investing in. I always recommend investing in good basic pieces like blazers, trousers, and even sweaters. Beautiful coats that you wear season after season and accessories are all worth the luxury buck. At the same time, certain basics are as good if you get them at Uniqlo; like white t-shirts or turtlenecks in every colour! The same goes for super trendy pieces like neon for example. If something that is trending is something that I wear all the time, I’m happy to invest in it. If it’s something like neon that I might only wear for a few seasons, then to Zara it is!
2. UNDERSTAND WHAT SUITS YOU
Do not buy into a trend, regardless of where you are buying it if it doesn’t suit you or speak to your personal style. I know how easy it is to get swept up with what everyone on Instagram is wearing but if a certain trend (like me and bicycle shorts) doesn’t speak to you, then don’t bother buying it. A part of being a smart shopper is understanding what suits you. By not buying that one super trendy piece, you are one step closer to saving and buying that amazing luxury item you’ve been eyeing and that you’d actually wear forever.
3. ALWAYS READ THE LABEL
You will be surprised at how many times I’ve walked out of a high street, worn a piece and realised that the label says it’s dry clean only. For many, that’s a major turn off, especially when you want something that is easy to wear every day. Always read the label when shopping at high street stores to make sure that it really is worth buying! Cost per wear right
4. KNOW YOUR BRANDS
What always makes my shopping experiences easier is knowing which brands suit me and that I want to buy into. Regardless of whether it’s luxury or not, I know which brands make jeans that fit me best, sweaters that make me feel good and accessories that I love. At the same time, know which brands really don’t work for you. This will seriously save you browsing time! (For example, I think Louboutin is BEAUTIFUL, but the shoes hurt my feet so much! Instead, I go for Prada or Gianvito Rossi!)
5. GO SOLO
Everyone loves to take their girlfriends on a shopping trip but believe it or not I prefer to go solo. Sometimes having too many voices telling you that something does or does not look good, can soften the most important one of all, yourself! At the end of the day, you need to look and feel good in something. There is no harm sending a WhatsApp to your girl group to ask their opinion but browsing and shopping by yourself can help keep your mind clear and avoid those impulse “If she’s getting it I want it too but I’ll never actually wear it” purchases.
What are some shopping rules you always follow? What are you eyeing right now?
