3 Tricks for Taking Better Instagram Photos

Luxury fashion blogger Shloka Narang of The Silk Sneaker shares how to take a better Instagram photo with her three tipsa

INSTA READY

Instagram; everyone’s favourite social media platform. As everyone from your mom to your friend’s cat makes their way onto Instagram and IGTV, standing out can seem harder than ever. If there’s anything I’ve learnt about the Instagram algorithm, it’s that it favours good content above all else. So, how do you take your Instagram level to the next level with better Instagram photos? Today I’m sharing three tips to think about every time you open your camera app to capture that perfect insta-worthy moment.

I would love to hear if you use any of these tips already and how they’ve helped you, or if you have any other questions about Instagram! Leave me a comment below!

Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram here!

I also did a special story on all the apps I use for my Instagram stories to take them to the next level. You can read all about that here.

TURN ON YOUR GRID

When taking a photo in the camera app (or any camera app for that matter), the key to taking a good Instagram photo, and a good photo, in general, is to use the rule of thirds. To put it simply, the camera app will have a grid function which shows you a 3×3 grid on your screen. The key to a good photo is to have the point of interest be in any of the intersections in that grid. That is where your eye naturally draws to first.

I also like to sometimes put myself in the centre of the image, as long as my background allows for that. For example, in this photo here, I was standing on a corner. The pavement on either side was moving inwards to meet in the middle, so your eye is naturally drawn to this point.

TRY FOR NATURAL LIGHTING

Natural lighting is always best for taking better Instagram photos. It’s always more appealing to the eye and the balance in the photo will turn out better than you having to go through and fix it later. As you get better with natural light, you’ll notice that when there is too much light the photo can be too harsh, and if there is too little light, there isn’t enough depth. It’s about finding the source of light and trying to face it the best you can.

For example, in this image here, I found a window in a department store and I loved the way the light was coming in. By perching on the window and looking out, the natural light lit my face and created this image.

As you get more confident with lighting, you can also start to experiment with shadows and creating interesting imagery around that.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF COLOURS

It’s always nice to have a pop of colour or a dominant colour in an image, no matter how monochrome heavy it may be. Having that pop of colour in your Instagram photo adds another layer of interest and depth and can also help you when you are thinking about how to put your Instagram feed together.

For example, in this image here, my colours are mainly black and white with gold but I added in that extra touch with the orange earrings and orange bracelet. That small change and detail really made the difference to this photo and gave it a new point of interest.

(Also note the use of symmetry in this photo, my grid was super helpful! But flat lays are a whole new story, would you want me to do a post about them?)

How To Make Your Outfit Look More Expensive

Fashion blogger Shloka Narang of The Silk Sneaker showcases how to make your outfit look more expensive with Zara and Urban Outfitters

Any Outfit Can Look More
Than It Is With These Tips…

One of the questions I am constantly asked is where I shop for clothes. A lot of you expect me to churn out a list of designer brands and are most surprised when I tell you that the sweater you adore is from one of my favourite high street stores! Making your outfit look more expensive is much simpler than you think and you don’t need to break the bank to create that must have look of the day! I love to mix high street with high end, to create outfits that can be recreated for every day. When I’m mixing up different pieces, there are four tricks that always make my outfit look more expensive. Read on to find out!

1. Classic Colours Will Never Fail You
Neutral colours (think black, white, grey, earth tones, navy) never go out of style. These are the kinds of colours that match with anything. They are also the pieces you will use the most! These are also the colours that look the classiest and will automatically make your outfit look more expensive. Neutrals also look great on every skin tone and are universally flattering, which also make your look more luxe. A classic colour will always look more expensive than one that is trend-driven!

2. Be Aware of Patterns
Certain patterns are effortless and therefore always in style, no matter the season. Stripes are one such pattern. You can combine different types of stripes or simply wear one striped piece. Regardless of whether it’s from Zara like my dress here, or somewhere else, a pattern that is so chic and always in style, will always look more expensive and put together. If patterns are not your thing, don’t shy away from textures like cable knits and silk.

3. Monochrome
Taking a cue from point one, an easy to way to make a neutral more interesting is by creating a monochrome look. You can try a camel top to toe look for a super luxe look or go all navy for something a bit more laidback yet luxurious, like what I’ve done here! A monochrome look is a no-brainer way to make your outfit seem more pricey than it was. Just be aware of the shades you are combining; avoid combining shades that are too far apart on the colour scale!

4. Invest in Accessories
If there is ever anything to invest your money in, it is accessories. Accessorise, rather than clothes, will last you a lifetime. A lot of my bags have been passed down to me by my mother and I hope to one day pass them down too. Well made shoes and bags will always draw positive attention and create a more luxurious look and feel to your outfit. Remember it is quality over quantity when it comes to these things. Your accessories do not need to be designer for them to be good quality either! A lot of premium brands like Sandro and Theory make beautiful bags and shoes too!

I always define my style as “laidback luxury” but a luxury for me isn’t just about the name on the label. Luxury is about how something looks and feels on you; it’s about having the best piece for yourself. Your favourite sweater might be from Topshop but if it makes you feel like a million bucks, that’s a luxury too! I hope that I can remind you all that you don’t need to be wearing a dress from the runway to look beautiful. It could just be from the rack at Zara, but make you smile just as much!

How I Wear Metallic in the Day

Let yourself have your metallic moment in the sun…Literally.

I guess metallic is having a bit of a moment here on TSS. With my guide to all things glitter and the best ways to wear this never dying trend (I mean.. it’s kind of a given that every year, a winter trend is going to be sequins or metallic right?) I couldn’t help but also sharing how I style metallic in the day. Our usual instinct when we see something shiny is to hang it up with our party dresses and tuxedo jackets because where else would you wear it…right? *hit the buzzer* Wrong! Metallic in the day is as wearable as your favourite sweater, especially when you layer it with some other pieces and tone it down with some day time accessories. If you mix it up with some neutral colours like black or white, you’ll stand out just the perfect amount.

I loved that this Topshop metallic knit was sleeveless, which makes it super easy to layer over another sweater to make it casual for the day! Plus, I love the double turtleneck – not only does it keep me warm, but it also looks pretty cool!

This top is also a great one to take from day to night – I actually wore this exact same outfit, minus the white turtleneck, for a friends birthday party at night and it was a total hit! I love when an outfit can really carry you from day to night and sometimes, simple really is best!

In other news, you can read all about what I’ve been up to and what my favourite new products are in my Monday Update! I’m currently attempting to pack for a really big trip I have coming up but I always find it can be an overwhelming process for a lot of people. That’s why I’m thinking of sharing some of my packing tips that I’ve learnt over the years! Is that something you guys would want to read about?

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of up and coming brands. I love to find pieces from new designers who are timeless but unique. To me, luxury is all about feeling good in what you wear, but it’s also about the feel of fabrics on your skin, textures and all round quality. For Troy London, quality is of the utmost important. That, and this feeling of effortlessness and ease, where you can just pick up one of their pieces, throw it on and just feel great because you know it looks great too. After all, a wardrobe full of effortlessly classic pieces that last season after season is key.

What I really love about all these pieces is that although there is a sense of “countryside” to them, the designs and detailing are so contemporary, which means you could wear all these pieces, literally anywhere. For me, the Jodhpur pants are the embodiment of exactly that – although the style may make me want to grab some boots and go ride a horse, at the same time, the leather detailing on the side and on the seams makes these pants a great option for any other plans I might have (Don’t worry, I will be stopping by the stable to for a ride on Buttercup.. what I always imagined my pony would be named…)

When I slipped on this grey sweater, which I opted for in a size up, I literally never wanted to get out of it. I wanted to eat, sleep, drink, party, and just live in this sweater. I had suddenly found the solution to one of the most irritating problems of winter. You know when you pick up a sweater, it’s super cute, you love it, you wear it and then suddenly it just itches every party of your body cause the fabric is just.. itchy, causing everyone around you to think that you’ve broken out into some.. strange rash or are carrying a nest of ticks around with you? Well, this sweater is the exact opposite of that – this sweater is soft, warm and cuddly but most importantly it looks effortless and matches with anything. This gorgeous green cape as well is one of the most versatile pieces of the collection. Troy London focus on outerwear for women, and this cape is the perfect colour for pretty much any outfit (haven’t you heard, khaki is the new neutral) and the fit and style makes it great for day and night! Not to mention, it’s really warm.

Even after all that, my most favourite thing has to be the fur cuffs. You’ve seen them on my Instagram and you’re seeing them here – these are detachable fur cuffs. Yes. You read that correctly my friend – These fur cuffs (which also come in black) can be attached to anything so suddenly any sweater.. or pair of pants.. or boots.. or however creative you wanna get, can have that extra touch of oomph. I’ve been sticking them on to everything recently and trust me, if you do the same, watch the compliments roll in!

I always wondered, what made a pair of pants worthy of the title “Smarty pants”? Is it how smart you feel when you are wearing these styled pants, or just the general smartness that revolves around their vibe? Either way, whatever the rules may be, I would say that these pants are pretty smart. These pants manage to combine round metallic details (Which I feel are always having a moment?) as well as some superb draping, to give you, the coolest pair of styled pants you’ll have in your closet this season. I bet you can’t guess where they are from either…I’ll give you a hint. Starts with Z and ends with.. ara.So what better way to style a pair of perfectly draped pants with a perfectly draped turtleneck? I just adore the way the features of these two star pieces came together to create this look. With my favourite accessories, I was ready for anything and I was feeling pretty smart about it too.

On a more personal note, I was able to catch up with a super dear friend of mine this weekend who came to visit me from Bath. We got to go see Andy Murray play at the ATP World Tour Semi finals which was a dream come true! I’m a huge tennis fan, and my goal is to go see Roger Federer play! I also got to celebrate another super close friend’s bridal shower on Sunday which was amazing. Did you guys see the cake? (It’s on my instagram don’t worry you haven’t missed it!) It was amazing and tasted better than it looked – if that’s even possible? I’m going to start Christmas shopping super soon! Starting with my present for Secret Santa. Three ways to bring your favourite jumpsuit into the winter season. Wear your favourite piece in three unique ways with super fashionable layering.

3 Ways to Wear A Jumpsuit this Winter

Whoever told you you could only wear a jumpsuit that one way, was very wrong. A jumpsuit is one of the most versatile pieces in your arsenal and it works for all seasons! Since winter is coming, or rather winter is pretty much here, I styled my favourite Hush jumpsuit in three different ways for three different occasions! Scroll down and have a look – and remember, a jumpsuit is your new best friend!

The Casual

As the weather continues to drop, elevate your casual jumpsuit look with some smart layering. A white turtleneck underneath this black jumpsuit provides the perfect contrast to create a luxe look for everyday! Paired with your favourite boots, you have an easy go to outfit for when you aren’t quite sure what to wear! Easy!

A casual jumpsuit can easily become a semi formal one with just a few simple tricks. By layering a collared shirt underneath your jumpsuit and topping it with a statement blazer, you’ve got yourself a stylish outfit that rocks as much as your favourite trouser and blazer combination but with that added twist!

The Formal

Taking a casual jumpsuit and transforming it for a night out is not as hard as you might think! This is by far my favourite way to wear a jumpsuit. I love to add some texture to my outfit with a little bit of lace and a velvet choker – two things that always look gorgeous for a night out. Throw on a pair of heels and a solid statement lip and you have a laid back yet incredibly chic night outfit.

Christmas with Hush

It’s that wonderful time of the year again…

Take a little sneak peek into my Christmas wreath making with Hush. Trust me, it was incredibly messy but incredibly fun! Plus by the end of it, I got to scout out the cutest Christmas pieces just for you!

Twas many nights before Christmas but the scene was set. Complete with cozy sweaters, sequins dresses and champagne, I was met.

The Hush Christmas event was the definition of cozy but with the added flair and style that Hush always guarantees. I was most excited about my evening with Hush because we were going to be making our very own wreaths! I had never, up until that evening, ever made a wreath before (Not really ideal weather in India?) Determined to be awesome at it, I got to work, not without admiring the gorgeous winter collection! Our expert on hand, Augustus Bloom, provided us with the step by step instructions on how to create the perfect Christmas wreath. I did not realise how difficult it was to do, nor did I realise how incredibly messy it is! Needless to say, there was a lot of moss everywhere, a lot of pine, a lot of lavender and a lot of wire… But in the end I think I got it!

Wearing Pyjamas In The Day + Recent Reflections

The past 24 hours have been nothing short of surprising.

Fashion blogger Shloka Narang of The Silk Sneaker shows how to wear the pyjama trend in Topshop pants and Monisha Jaising gilet
Fashion blogger Shloka Narang of The Silk Sneaker shows how to wear the pyjama trend in Topshop pants and Monisha Jaising gilet

Amidst all the thoughts about this pyjama trend driven outfit, there are other topics that seem to be shining a lot brighter in my mind right now. Regardless of what side you were on, or who you voted for, the results of the US presidential election came as a shock to us all. It has governed the topic of conversation on every single whatsapp group I have and has been the go-to topic of conversation at any meal, hair dresser appointment and even spin class I’ve had recently.

Trust me, the air of confusion and fear about the future of the USA has reached London as well. With next to no understanding of what exactly the future presidents policies are especially in terms of trade and defence, the global community is left in a state of shock. It then of course comes as no surprise that a whole generation of votes have taken to the streets to roar their opinions. However, once the overwhelming feelings begin to settle down and the fog clears, there is one thing that none of us can ignore; the only way now is forward. Although a nation finds itself divided by a brutal election season, it is up to that same country to come together, regardless of sex, gender, race or anything else, and pave a path to the future that leads to a better world for generations to come. My hopes now are that the candidate running and the now president elect are two different voices, and that the latter is a voice of reason, understanding and togetherness.

To voice Hilary Clinton, no one can stop you from being who you want to be. Reach far, aim high and dream big. Be sure to be the best that you can be because it is up to us to set the precedent, to set the example and to ensure that we live in a world of love not hate. No matter what, as a woman of this generation, we rise back up and we keep going. I was truly inspired after watching Hilary Clintons gracious speech last night, as I’m sure you all were. Her speech truly rung with positivity and optimism and most of all, encouragement, that there is still hope.

Nevertheless, there was some positive news over the past day as well. Despite the fact that the news was governed by the elections, on the other side of the world one of the biggest democracies of the world took a massive step forward. I’m sure most of you know by now that I am Indian. When I heard the news that all 500RS and 1000RS notes are no longer considered legal tender, I was shocked in the best way possible. The governments action to finally crack down on the large amounts of black money circulating through the economy is a massive step forward in anti-corruption movement that is sure to lead to a brighter and better India. At least that was there to make me smile.

On a much lighter note, I can turn back to the pyjama outfit. (Hah, that even felt weird to write after this little heart to heart above) I’ll keep it brief though – the pyjama trend is one that I absolutely adore because who doesn’t love comfort. As a massive loungewear fan, being able to wear pyjama pants in the day, that too ones that were leopard print (double points!) is the perfect combination of style and ease. To add a balance, I paired it with a more formal high neck top and a fur gilet, striking a balance between trend and classic.

So, what is running through your head about this election? How are you feeling? I want to hear your thoughts!
